Mauricio Lopez was born in Colombia in 1973, and moved to New York City in 2000 searching for experiences and inspiration. His artwork consists mostly of abstract paintings and installations that explore the concept of built and natural environment, and how we interact with them. The architecture background has influenced his artwork and ideas thanks to the positions he has held, including, City Planning Director (Armenia, Colombia), during the reconstruction process after an earthquake that almost completely destroyed this city with a population of 400,000 people in 1999. His work has been selected for curated shows and public art installations, such as a public art commission by New York CityMetropolitan Transportation Authority, Arts for Transit; CONFLUX Festival, New York, 2008; Asterisk*, Brooklyn, 2002; Salón Regional de Artistas del Eje Cafetero, 1999; 'Centrarte' (Mural for the Armenia's Midtown Area), 1999; Reflexión Salones Nacionales de Arte, Museo de Arte Moderno, Pereira (Colombia). Mauricio's work has been presented in solo shows including: Manhattan Theatre Source, New York, 2005; Parque Nacional del Café, Montenegro (Colombia), 1998. His artwork is part of the Flat Files at Pierogi Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, and art collections at DWR (Design Within Reach), National Park of Colombian Coffee Culture, as well as private collections in USA, Europe and Colombia. |
