Final Lines of Travel drawing has been posted!!!

Hi everybody,

The final Lines of Travel drawing depicting the commute of over 75 persons in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan is up on my website. Please see the Conflux page to see the different layers for the map, including the ‘old’ routes people use in their daily commute, the ‘new’ or proposed Lines of Travel suggested during the interviews, and the combination of the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ lines, with and without the city map.

For details of the process visit the Lines of Travel page  in this blog.

Enjoy it!!!

Mauricio

We’re still working on the Lines of Travel drawing

Hello,

The response to Lines of Travel was so great, that we’re still processing information and haven’t been able to finish the drawing…but, we don’t want to keep it a mystery, so check out the Lines of Travel page to see an 85% progress drawing.

Thank you for your patience,

Mauricio

Finally a 25% progress Lines of Travel map has been posted

Hi everybody,

I’m very happy to tell you that the Lines of Travel digital map is shaping up with Jess’ help. The map is looking more and more interesting by the second. You can check the progress map by visiting the lines of travel – conflux blog page. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Mauricio

Rain date is today!!!!

Due to rain yesterday, we decided to cancel the interviewing process in the 4th location (4:30pm – 7:00pm), but we’re going out today to get more people involved…look for us around the West Village, no specific place today, we will just be wandering the streets of the neighborhood.  Here are some images from the last 2 days of interviews with commuters…the ones that stopped for us of course. We notice that Lines of Travel has two components, one is people who stop and get the official map from us, and the others, are the ones that change their Line of Travel by avoiding us. Some people were bold enough to go across to the other sidewalk or walk 10 feet around us so we couldn’t stop them. Thank you to the ones who thought that an art project is worth 2 minutes of your day!!!
Judy did an amazing job stopping people and also fine tuning our tag lines. The final one was: ‘We’re working for an art project part of Conflux Festival…’
Thanks Judy for all your hard work, standing on the corners of the West Village all day, preparing press releases and making sure people knew what the project was about. Jen, you made the day with your charm! Jess, thanks for all your help with the graphics, photographs and interviews.
The final map will be posted by Sept. 22. Stay tune and see the progress of the Lines of Travel digital image.

4th interviewing session cancelled due to weather forecast

Due to weather forecast, we have cancelled the fourth interviewing location this afternoon (corner of Bleecker Street and 8th Avenue – 9/12, 4:30-7:00pm). In exchange, the artist will extend the morning interviewing process into the early afternoon, and will be wandering around the West Village neighborhood.

We appologize for the inconvenience.

Lines of Travel

LINES OF TRAVEL is ON!!!

Lines of Travel started this morning on the first day of CONFLUX 2008. I was very excited to see how people were going to react when we stop them on the streets. Personally, I usually don’t stop for anybody because I always want to get to my destination. Thankfully West Village residents and commuters were more graceful and patient than me, and stop to find about the project.

A total of 15 persons got their own custom map and will be exploring the city. THANK YOU!!! for participating on this project.

It was interesting to see how people reacted to us, some didn’t acknowledge our present, some just say ’sorry’ or ‘no thanks’, or some just gave us dirty looks…it’s just understandable, they were commuting to work or school, and probably late. We were the last thing they wanted to find on the street. But, some had enough time to stop for a couple of minutes, get their maps and commit to a new route. I hope they follow through and discover the city. In the mean time, we’re preparing for the 2nd place this afternoon, Christopher St and 7th Ave. My forecast is pretty good for this area, Thursday and the bars are open! I expect to get busy drawing commutes by Sheridan Square. I should probably wear something more appropriate for the occasion, right?

Me, and my team of Travelers will be there this afternoon, and I hope you can join us and get your custom maps, otherwise check out the schedule because we’ll be out tomorrow as well.

See you,

Mauricio
