lines of travel – conflux

Take a look at the final Lines of Travel drawing on my website. You can explore the different layers to see the ‘old’ lines, the ‘new’ or proposed ones, and the combination of both…enjoy it!!!

The digital drawing has been taking longer than expected, that’s why we have not posted the final one. Here is an 85% progress drawing showing Lines of Travel. As soon as we’re finished we’ll post the complete image. The response to the project was so great that there’s a lot of information to process… and that’s GREAT!!!

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

During a regular work day people from different neighborhoods commute to perform their daily activities and move through the city leaving their paths. ‘Lines of Travel’ explores this phenomenon by briefly interviewing residents of the West Village and drawing their ‘Lines of Travel’ on maps of the City, one per person. At this point, each resident will be encouraged to take a detour to get to his/her destination, leaving his/her routine and comfort zone to discover new aspects of the City, maybe new places to eat, hang out or simply walk by. This experience will allow people to spatially recognize their commute, an action that is almost subconscious given the daily repetition of it. At the same time, proposing a new route will challenge them to look for additional elements of the City, and discover things that may impress them. People will be asked to send feedback and check out the digital drawing depicting the journey of everybody involved in the experiment. Visualizing how their neighbors go back and forth from the neighborhood to the City, will serve to measure the vitality of their community, their diversity, their importance in the City, and among others, allow individuals to identify themselves as part of the complex urban life. It makes the personal act of commuting a collective experience, something that in a City of millions of people we almost forget.

The NYC Department of Transportation could probably use this information to get a good idea of what is congested and what isn’t. Maybe they would pay for it each time you update it for them???
